should elite colleges shift to STEM fields?

I’ve been thinking about all the obnoxious Social Justice Warrioring (is that even a word?) on campus and have been horrified at the implications this has for society at large (i.e. is this type of cancer going to spread to the private sector?). A lot of conservatives (and I’m not one BTW) talk about how colleges are bad and unamerican or whatever, but that is the baby out of the bathwater fallacy. What really bothers them is the charlatan professors of gender/ethnic studies or bizarre new fads (trigger warning, microaggression etc).

Almost all the SJW students (mattress girl was a visual art major) and almost all the SJW professors are in fields outside of STEM. Of all the professors at Duke who signed that manifesto during the rape hoax, only one was a professor in a STEM field. That’s not to say STEM professors aren’t liberal. I’d guess STEM professors are still easily 3-1 democrats (or higher) but it tends not to affect teaching style. I might add that they could add in a few more fields besides STEM including Business-related majors and an MBA program. I would say Law School too but law school also has been infected by SJWs.

So what would happen if this was implemented? Obviously AA would shift to STEM or business fields and if NAMs didn’t do well, would drop out. I personally think Larry Summers would have done this if he had his way but even if a uni president does something like this without any mention to race, that the NAACP LDF would freak out and bitch about some kind of “disparate impact” and what not. The bigger question is where the AA students would go? My guess is that the Obamas for example would have gone to U of Illinois or U of Hawaii and done quite well.

If you’re trying to start a constructive conversation, don’t take a political label — “SJW” — at face value. Define it in a way that removes the value judgment. “SJW” generally is simply an insult used by those on the opposite side of a social issue discussion to depict their opponent as focused on emotion instead of logic.

Where’s the evidence that the personal politics of an SJW (still undefined in any objective sense) affect teaching style?

    Evidence?

To the extent AA is operating, it already operates in ‘STEM’ or ‘business fields.’

  2. well not policy as defined by a state and national legislature but more of something that a colleges board of trustees would consider. The idea that after phasing things out, eventually Harvard would have a Science and Math department (STEM), a Business school; MA/PHD stem programs, and a MBA school.

In effect that would get rid of over half the school’s budget so its obviously a pipe dream.
